Booking choice: The volcano, waterfall and coffee day trip, from $139 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most Poás tours from San José follow one loop: the crater in the morning, La Paz Waterfall about 20 minutes beyond the park, and a coffee farm on the lower slopes. They range from $105 to $189 per person on GetYourGuide, and the differences are easy to miss in the listings.
Three things separate them. When you reach the rim, before the cloud. Whether "La Paz Waterfall" means a roadside look or the full Waterfall Gardens. And who you share the van with. Here is each tour against those three.
The quick answer
For the crater, La Paz and lunch at a coffee farm with pickup, book the volcano, waterfall and coffee day trip ($139). For the best shot at a clear crater, go private ($183) with an early start. For the full Waterfall Gardens with hummingbirds and the animal rescue, pick the gardens day ($189) or the Café Doka day ($170). On a budget, the $105 tour is cheapest, but check its inclusions. With a car, a SINAC ticket and an early slot beat them all on price.

Which Poás and La Paz Waterfall tour should you book?
The day trip for most people, the private tour for the early slot, and the gardens or Doka days if you want the full Waterfall Gardens.

Check dates for the volcano, waterfall and coffee day tripWhy does the time you reach the crater matter most?
Cloud usually fills the crater by 10:30 or 11:00, and every tour gets the same 20 minutes at the viewpoint. An early arrival is the one upgrade that changes what you see.
Since 28 August 2026 groups of up to 56 get 20 minutes at the rail. No tour buys more. What differs is the order of the day: the day trip's listing puts Poás first, and the private tour advertises early access. The Café Doka and Waterfall Gardens listings start with coffee, which pushes the crater later. Ask the operator what time your park slot is before you book.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens or the roadside overlook?
The gardens are a half-day park with five waterfalls, hummingbirds and rescued animals. The overlook is a free roadside look at La Paz Waterfall itself.
The road below Vara Blanca passes right by La Paz Waterfall, and many tours stop there for photos. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a private park beside it: about 3.5 km of trails, a hummingbird garden with 26 species, a butterfly observatory, a frog house and rescue enclosures with big cats and monkeys. Foreign adults pay US$56 plus tax and children 3 to 12 US$40 plus tax, valid to 15 December 2026, and it is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The gardens day and the Café Doka day include the park and lunch. The day trip has a photo stop of about 30 minutes, not the gardens; the private tour stops at the roadside overlook.

Explore the Waterfall Gardens tour Tour detailsDoka or Hacienda Alsacia: which coffee stop?
Doka is a working family estate near Alajuela with breakfast and a long tour. Hacienda Alsacia is Starbucks' own farm and visitor centre on the slopes of Poás.
On the Café Doka tour the listing gives breakfast and a 2-hour coffee tour before the volcano. Hacienda Alsacia appears on the day trip, with lunch and about 2.5 hours there, and on the semi-private Starbucks farm tour, whose listing slug mentions breakfast. Alsacia is the polished one, with views over the coffee rows; Doka shows more of the processing side.
Want something smaller? Bitzu runs 2-hour tours on a small family farm in the Poás area, a good add-on if you drive yourself.

Is a private tour worth it?
Yes, if the clear crater is the point of your trip. You set the start time, skip the hotel loop and travel as two to four people.
The private Poás and La Paz tour runs six hours in an electric car, with pickup anywhere in the Central Valley, park entry, parking and fresh fruit. Meals are not included. The listing asks for names and passport numbers 24 hours before, so it can book the early slot. At $183 per person it costs $44 more than the day trip and gives up the lunch and coffee farm.
The semi-private Starbucks farm tour ($135, 6 hours) sits between the two: a small group, the crater and Hacienda Alsacia.

Just your group of two to four, an early start for the crater, strawberries at Katy's and the La Paz overlook.

The $105 volcano, La Paz Waterfall and coffee tasting tour is the lowest-priced full day. Check what is included for your date before paying.
Its listing shows pickup from San José, the volcano, La Paz Waterfall and a coffee tasting. It doesn't say clearly whether park entry, lunch or the full gardens are included. Ask, or compare the total against the $139 day trip, which lists park entry and lunch. A cheaper tour that charges for entry and lunch on the day can end up costing more.
The lowest-priced day: the volcano, La Paz Waterfall and a coffee tasting from San José.
Check dates for the volcano and coffee tasting tourIs it cheaper to drive yourself?
Yes, for two or more people with a rental car. The park, the gardens and lunch come to about US$100 per adult with tax, before the car and fuel.
A do-it-yourself version of the gardens day, per foreign adult:
| Cost item | Price |
|---|---|
| Poás ticket on SINAC | US$16.95 |
| Parking at Poás | About US$4 to 6, per car |
| La Paz Waterfall Gardens | US$56 plus tax |
| Gardens buffet lunch | US$16 plus tax |
| Strawberries in Poasito | A few dollars |
Add the car, fuel and the stress of the mountain road. You also lose free cancellation: SINAC doesn't refund for weather. The resold entry ticket ($32) gives drivers free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The getting there guide covers the drive.
Driving up? A park entry that cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the park entry ticketWhat should you bring, and what do tours leave out?
Your passport, a warm layer, a rain jacket and some colones. Check whether lunch and tips are included on your tour.
- Passport: tickets are personal. Tours ask for the numbers at booking.
- Layers: 10 to 18°C at the crater, much warmer at the waterfall.
- Cash: for strawberries, snacks and tips. Tips are extra on the Doka tour and included on the gardens day.
- Botos: some listings still promise a walk to Laguna Botos. That trail was not among those named open in August 2026; don't book for it.
- Patience: the park can close at short notice. Most tours here cancel free up to 24 hours before. Check the park status.

Frequently asked questions

The Poás, coffee and Waterfall Gardens day ($189) and the Café Doka day ($170) both include the gardens with lunch. The main day trip and the private tour stop at the waterfall itself, not the gardens.
How long is a Poás and La Paz Waterfall tour?
From about 6 hours (private and semi-private) to about 10 hours (the two days with the full gardens), with pickup in San José.
Is park entry included in Poás tours?
On the day trip, the private tour and the gardens day, yes, says each listing. Check the $105 tour's inclusions for your date.
Can I see Laguna Botos on a tour?
Not for now. The August 2026 rules named only the main trail and Sombrilla de Pobre as open. Listings that promise Botos are out of date.
